In response to a record burden of cancer, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease, clinicians in the West of Scotland have developed long standing clinical and biomedical expertise. This is complemented by more fundamental research being carried out in the local Universities. The West of Scotland has the benefit of a stable well-documented patient population of three million people, which is ideal for epidemiology studies. West of Scotland hospitals are well know for clinical trials (e.g. WOSCOPS).
