UWS enhancing Malawi Nursing and Midwifery links

21 August 2008

The University of the West of Scotland recently played host to Dr Address Matala, Vice Principal (College of Nursing) of the University of Malawi, who visited UWS to discuss future partnership opportunities between both universities.

UWS, which has enjoyed links with the University of Malawi since 2000, has Scotland's largest School of Health, Nursing & Midwifery, with almost 5,000 students.

During her time at UWS, Dr Matala gained an insight into the activities of the University's School of Health, Nursing and Midwifery across all four of its campuses and undertook a tour of the University's Clinical Skills Laboratorities at its Dumfries Campus.

The visit also saw discussions between both institutions regarding the current collaborative provision and future curriculum activities.

Currently both institutions are delivering a joint project in Malawi which aims to see the much needed introduction of a healthcare facility in the remote rural village of Kaponda.

Heather Simpson, Vice Dean of the University's School of Health, Nursing and Midwifery, said:  "This visit saw us develop our collaborative working on curriculum development for Nursing and Midwifery programmes, as well as learning and teaching methodologies to ensure student centred learning.

"It also gave Dr Matala the chance to compare the state-of-the-art Clinical Skills Laboratories we have here at UWS with those at the University of Malawi."
