Research and Consultancy Services

The University of Strathclyde has a long-standing world-wide reputation not only for excellence in the field of academic research and its commercialisation, but also for commercially-relevant research to assist companies in achieving market leadership. Research & Consultancy Services deals with all aspects of the commercialisation of the University's research offering industrial and commercial bodies ease of access to the vast array of research activity carried out across the University.

In accordance with the University's Mission Statement, the Offices role is to support University staff in undertaking research which combines excellence with relevance and to attract and secure funding for a variety of projects.

The main functions of the Office are:

  • To identify, protect and commercialise the University's intellectual property arising from research
  • To provide services to academic staff assisting them to market, obtain funding for, develop, and manage their research and research-related activities
  • To negotiate and administer the contractual aspects of research grants and contracts, and to limit the risks to the University, which are inherent in sponsored research
  • To assist with the formation of spin-out companies, joint ventures, research institutes and other corporate and institutional bodies related to the University's research base
  • To support services rendered and consultancy activities; and to implement the approved policies relating to such activities

Research & Consultancy Services administers over 400 research grants and contracts per annum, with a value in the region of £25 million. Added to this activity, the Office maintains a large portfolio of licence agreements, patents and filed patent applications (in excess of 160).

Since its inception in 1984, the Offices licensing activities have generated a royalty income of £28M for the University. In addition, more than 30 spin-out companies have been successfully formed with the help and guidance of the Office. These activities ultimately create wealth for the University and its staff, while helping to advance the wellbeing of local, national and international communities.
