Behavioural and neuropharmacological studies are being undertaken to investigate the neuronal basis of anxiety, including the use of a range of mapping techniques to determine the areas of the brain important in animal models of anxiety. This complex area of research illustrates how two different but complementary approaches can be used to unravel some of the details of how the brain functions in the genesis and control on anxiety. Similar techniques are being applied to study the brain areas involved in the effects of various constituents of cannabis, and to animal models of amnesia.
