The Department of Vision Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University is the only such department within Scotland. It is also unique in operating undergraduate degree in Optometry and a Diploma of Higher Education in Ophthalmic Dispensing.

As a centre of excellence for Optometry and Orthoptics, the Department has developed close links with both professions and is active in the promotion of post-graduate education and pre-registration training. There are two part-time post-graduate evening courses: Contact Lens Practice and Anomalies of Binocular Vision.

The Department has an active research programme with up to 20 full-time post-graduate students registered for PhD degrees. The Department operates a state of the art Eye Clinic on the University's City Campus, a teaching clinic where students examine patients.

The eye clinic has been operating since 1971 but since 1994 it has been located in its state-of-the-art premises on City Campus. The clinic welcomes over five thousand patients each year and is staffed by members of the Department, each dealing with patients in their own area of expertise. In addition, it operates as a teaching clinic where 3rd and 4th year students are able to examine patients. The Clinic is divided into the following specialist areas:

  • Contact Lenses
  • Sub-Normal Vision
  • Children's Vision
  • Anomalies of Binocular Vision
  • Clinical Electrophysiology
  • Orthoptics

The Clinic dispenses and manufactures spectacles on the premises and also offers services to VDU users and employees requiring specialised glasses for safety in the workplace. In addition, Continuing Education and Refresher courses for practitioners are also on offer.
