Over 40 students from the University of Glasgow's IBLS Faculty are taking part in a week long enterprise initiative Be A Biotech Buddy, organised by Scottish Institute for Enterprise as part of Enterprise Week. Enterprise Week from the 15th - 21st November is a UK wide celebration of enterprise in all its forms - business start up, social enterprise and enterprising activities. The aim of the week, devised by Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is to inspire young people with the spirit of enterprise. BABB is an online game based around business and bioscience. By participating students learn more about business and its association with biology.
The game takes the form of five scenarios each of which involves a question with three possible answers. The students have to combine their bioscience knowledge with business skills to choose the most suitable answer and provide a short supporting statement to back up their choice. The scenarios cover the use of drugs in sport, the introduction of a non-native species into an ecosystem, ecological destruction v business profits, life saving drug research and GM crops.
Each entry is judged by Mr Business and Dr Boffin. Mr Business looks for sound business reason and creativity in answers. To gain marks from Mr Business the students need to ensure that their reply is commercially viable, will boost profits and also be original and creative. Dr Boffin is the science guru who marks with a bioscience hat on (or at least a white coat) and gives points for biology knowledge and scientific reasoning. The winning student receives a prize of £200 for their efforts.
