NEW DEAN OF MEDICINE APPOINTED

5 August 2004

The University is very pleased to announce that Professor David Barlow has accepted the position of Executive Dean Faculty of Medicine.

Professor Barlow, who was born and educated in Glasgow, has held senior academic positions in Oxford for the past twenty years. He is Nuffield Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Oxford and an honorary consultant at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. His clinical field is reproductive medicine and he is Editor-in-Chief of the leading journal "Human Reproduction" and a Member of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). He has a major interest in menopause and osteoporosis and is Chairman of the National Osteoporosis Society. He is currently chairing the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), Clinical Guideline on Osteoporosis and he chaired the recent NICE Clinical Guideline on Infertility that will open up NHS funding of infertility in England and Wales.

Commenting on the appointment, Sir Muir Russell said: 'I am delighted that Professor Barlow will be joining the University and leading the Faculty of Medicine. He is a distinguished academic who will build on the Faculty's strong foundations and the key partnerships it has, especially with the NHS. In doing so he will bring a wealth of experience and an outstanding track record of success. It is particularly pleasing to welcome him back to his native city and his alma mater, and I am looking forward to working with him as we continue to build on the great strengths of Medicine in Glasgow.'

Professor Barlow will take up his appointment at a date to be agreed. He replaces Professor Steve Smith who left to take up the post of Head of Medical School at Imperial College, London.
