SCOTTISH SHOWCASE FOR MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES

4 May 2006

The cutting edge of new medical technologies is being brought to Edinburgh by Scottish Enterprise this summer.

The enterprise network is the regional host for this year’s BioDevice Partnering Conference on June 13-14.

“This is a key event in the global industry calendar and is a huge vote of confidence in the reputation of Scotland’s medical devices sector that they’ve chosen to come here,” said Scottish Enterprise’s director of life sciences, Ken Snowden.

Nearly 40 companies from Israel to the USA and throughout Europe will be presenting at the event which presents a forum to match business opportunities between the medical technology sector and the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. This includes four key Scottish companies B1 Medical, Culzean Medical, J&D Wilkie and Tayside Flow Technologies. So far more than 130 companies in total have signed up for the conference.

Scotland is home to a growing cluster of over 100 medical device companies supported by a further 150-strong supplier community. All in all this arm of the life sciences sector in Scotland employs more than 7,000 people directly.

One of the key strengths of the sector in Scotland is its academic foundations with all of the country’s 13 universities involved in groundbreaking medical technology research. Specialisations include imaging, opthalmics, orthopaedics, cardiovascular instrumentation and implants.

The conference will also explore links with other linked technologies such as tissue regeneration, biomaterials, coatings and biopolymers.

Company presentations will be based around biomaterials, cardiovascular, orthopedics and regenerative medicine.

“This is the ideal platform for companies looking to attract the attention of leading multinational medical device and pharmaceutical companies from Europe and beyond as potential clients, partners and investors,” said Mr Snowden.

Life sciences has been identified by Scottish Enterprise as one of six key industry sectors that they will be focusing support on in the future.

“All the evidence suggests life sciences has real potential to return major long term gains for the Scottish economy .Overall we aim to tailor our support more effectively by working more closely with industry, support for events like this allows to help companies identify new opportunities for growth,” he added.
