NEW GLOBAL IMAGE FOR SCOTLAND’S LIFE SCIENCE COMMUNITY

9 April 2006

Scotland’s growing life sciences sector has been given a further boost with the launch of a new national identity.

The new Life Sciences Scotland brand will be used to demonstrate Scotland’s joined up approach to developing the sector and for marketing to global investors and potential overseas partners.

The identity was unveiled by life sciences community body the Life Sciences Alliance at the world’s biggest industry show, BIO 2006, in Chicago on 9 April.

The Life Sciences Alliance comprises in excess of 20 public and private sector organisations and was set up last year as the first step towards encouraging closer collaboration within the community at a national level.

Alliance chairman and co-founder of Ardana plc, Dr Simon Best said: "Scotland is a small country in a rapidly globalising world. It is crucial that we play to our strengths and work together across the life sciences sector to build on our expertise.

"This new identity will make it easier to present a professional, focused, connected community to potential partners and investors. As individual companies and organisations, we have a proven record of success but closer collaboration within the community will open up new opportunities for us all."

During the last five years the life sciences sector in Scotland has doubled in size. It now accounts for more than 15 per cent of the UK industry, with research per head nearly 40 per cent more than the national average. Scotland is a widely acknowledged leader in fields like oncology, cardiovascular, diabetes and reproductive biology.

"Getting agreement across such a diverse spectrum of institutions and businesses to present a united front to the world is a huge step forward. Working more closely together is so important if we are to become a truly global player in all areas of life sciences," said Scottish Enterprise’s director of life sciences, Ken Snowden.

"Central to this is our international reputation and this identity cuts across industry, academia, NHS Scotland and the wider public sector, keeping messages about what we do. The collaboration between the leading medical universities and the NHS in Scotland in particular makes Scotland the ideal location for the development of new medicines."

More than 20 Scottish companies are attending the BIO, sponsored by Scottish Enterprise.

"Shows like this are a vital way of profiling Scotland’s life science sector, giving our leading researchers and companies a platform to reach potential partners and customers across the world," added Mr Snowden.

"It makes perfect sense to use this event to launch what will be Scotland’s new face to the international life science community. Having a single brand will go a long way to focusing international attention on what we have to offer."

As well as a visual identity the brand is backed by the new website www.lifesciencesscotland.com
