SCOTTISH BIOMEDICAL ANNOUNCES KOREAN DRUG DISCOVERY COLLABORATION

31 January 2006

Scottish Biomedical, the Glasgow based pre-clinical drug discovery service organisation, today announced that it has entered into a research collaboration focused on the development of a new drug for diabetes with South Korean pharmaceutical company Chong Kun Dang (CKD).

Under the terms of the agreement, Scottish Biomedical will provide biology and medicinal chemistry expertise to optimise small molecule compounds that have been identified by Scottish Biomedical as active against a validated diabetes drug target.

The Scottish Biomedical/CKD collaboration was one of 7 international projects submitted to KHIDI, the Korean Health Industry Development Institute under the International collaborative Research Programme for Drug Development.

“We are delighted to have won through against extremely strong international competition and we are looking forward to joining with CKD in exploiting a discovery made in Scotland to develop a drug offering hope to diabetes sufferers everywhere,” said Dr Stephen Hammond, CEO of Scottish Biomedical.

Scottish Biomedical’s drug discovery business integrates ethical tissue acquisition, molecular biology, protein technology, high-throughput screening, cell biology, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, to identify & validate novel drug targets and discover & optimise lead compounds. By combining expertise in cell systems biology with medicinal chemistry, Scottish Biomedical has established many successful drug discovery collaborations with pharmaceutical/biotech clients around the world.

Established in 1994, Scottish Biomedical (www.scottish-biomedical.com) is a private, profitable, pre-clinical drug discovery service organisation located on the West of Scotland Science Park in Glasgow, Scotland.
