A Lanarkshire-based medical devices manufacturer has launched a multi-million pound product that signals a global first in heart monitoring.
Omega Critical Care Ltd, has just been given the CE Mark endorsement to market their product, truCCOMS, throughout Europe. Theyve also been given FDA 510K approval to sell the system in the US.
The launch of the device is already widely anticipated by critical care and surgical specialists throughout the world, with an estimated potential global market running into billions of pounds. Buoyed by pre-launch interest, the company is also eyeing markets in the Middle East.
Omega Critical Care has been working with Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire since start-up two years ago and has been awarded £80,000 of support by the local enterprise company. Omega also received support from SE Lanarkshire to secure an RSA (Regional Selective Assistance) grant of £500,000 to support development of their product.
truCCOMS, developed at the companys headquarters in East Kilbride, is a breakthrough in real-time heart monitoring. The device is the worlds first continuous cardiac output monitoring system, giving clinicians second by second cardiac measurements directly from the heart during surgical procedures.
Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire has recognised the importance of growing competitive and sustainable industries and Omegas East Kilbride operation is set to become a lead player in the development of Lanarkshire as a centre of excellence in medical devices.
Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire has established a small team that is focused on exploring opportunities and stimulating activity in the medical devices sector within Lanarkshire and across Scotland as a whole. Lanarkshire is also home to MDIS, the Scottish medical devices membership organisation, and is the base location for four of the top ten medical device companies by employment in Scotland
Omega is currently employing 20 people and is establishing a robust, specialist distribution network to market and sell truCCOMs worldwide. Managing Director of Omega Critical Care, Dr Aws Nashef, said: We have just returned from launching truccoms at the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (EACTS) Congress in Barcelona and the response to truccoms totally exceeded anything we could have imagined.
The visitors to our booth confirmed that there is a huge requirement for our technology to make the monitoring of critically ill patients more accurate, user friendly and cost-effective. truccoms will satisfy those needs completely.
Liz Connolly, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire, said: The medical devices sector is an area of growing importance in Lanarkshire. It is clear that companies like Omega are able to capitalise on scientific excellence to create increased opportunities and high value jobs.
Omega is at the leading edge of its field and Im delighted that this new product is a Lanarkshire export. I am confident that this signals further growth in this sector not only for Lanarkshire, but for Scotland as a whole.
