Glasgow is the best place in the UK to run a business, according to a new study by Growing Business (GB) magazine.
The research covered crucial business issues including transport links, cost of premises, availability of skilled workers, crime levels and access to of government and EU grants.
GB said that while London was undoubtedly the "sexiest" UK city for businesses, Glasgow rated highly for the practical necessities. It added that while the city failed to top any of the categories, it performed consistently well.
London, which came third overall, was praised for its huge availability of office space, high number of educated workers and grants on offer; but poor transport links, high business rates and high cost of accommodation detracted from its overall ranking.
London was beaten to second place by Birmingham, which the researchers found enjoyed good transport links and a useful geographical location at the heart of the country.
Cities performing less well included Nottingham in fifteenth place out of twenty, which suffered because of its high crime levels; Manchester in thirteenth place and Hull, which brought up the rear.
Jim Wallace, enterprise minister for Scotland, said: "We have undergone a major transformation in the last 30 years from a high degree of heavy industry to a much more diverse economy. Our cities have benefited from growth in industries such as IT, finance services and biotechnology.
"Scotland is a great place to do business and I am delighted Glasgow has performed so well in this report. Our top priority is ensuring economic growth continues."
