Rt Hon John Reid is to deliver the prestigious University of Paisley Brough Lecture later this month on Thursday 27 January 2005, 6.30pm at Paisley Campus.
Reid, who is the current Secretary of State for Health, will give an address entitled Social Democratic Politics in an Age of Consumerism.
John Reid, 57, has held several key posts in the current government, including Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and Secretary of State for Scotland.
The Labour MP for Hamilton North and Bellshill acted as political adviser to Neil Kinnock from 1983 to 1985 and organised Scottish Trade Unionists for Labour from 1986 to 1987.
A University of Paisley spokesperson said: John Reid is one of the UKs leading politicians and he will undoubtedly deliver an entertaining and thought provoking address.
The University of Paisley Brough Lecture is an annual event and is named after Peter Brough the Paisley businessman whose 19th century bequest to the town provided funds for his trustees to establish the original Paisley Technical School on which the University is based.
Previous speakers have included the late First Minister Donald Dewar; John McCormick, former Controller of BBC Scotland; Rt Hon Helen Liddell; distinguished broadcaster Andrew Neil; and Tony Benn.
Attendance at the lecture is by ticket only. These are free and are being issued on a first-come first-served basis. Individuals can obtain tickets by calling the Universitys Corporate Marketing office on .
