BBC CALLS ON CALEDONIAN EXPERTISE FOR 'CHILD OF OUR TIME' PROGRAMME

14 January 2005

Jon Sykes, manager of the Glasgow Caledonian University’s pioneering e-Motion computer lab, was called on for his computing expertise by Professor Robert Winston, presenter of the popular BBC tv programme “Child of Our Time”.

The programme monitors the emotional, physical and mental development of 25 British children from birth to the age of 20 years old.

Expert Opinion

Jon was asked to give his opinion on the effects of computer games on children – particularly violent strategy games for the x-box. These games, rated 15, are often played by children as young as five years of age.

Along with Professor Winston, Jon observed that many of the effectsof this type of game-playing were surprisingly positive, aiding children’s hand eye co-ordination, concentration on individual tasks, and problem solving skills. However, the excitement level caused by the games can be a problem when keeping young children calm and relaxed.
