Korean Life sciences Seminar: Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine

18 May 2005 8.30 AM
Korean Life sciences Seminar: Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine

The regulatory environment for stem cell research in the UK and in South Korea is supportive and this has given scientists in both countries the opportunity to develop their positions as leaders in the field.

As a result of the recent developments in both Korea and Scotland, (Dr Hwang’s successful cloning of the first human embryo and the awarding of a UK licence to clone human embryos for research into motor neurone disease to Professor Ian Wilmut.) Scottish Development International and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) are delighted to offer you the unique opportunity to hear the latest developments from both of these scientists, and to develop your knowledge and understanding of the Korean research environment for stem cells and regenerative medicine.

As part of the on-going relationship between Scotland and Korea this seminar will give you the opportunity to network with key players from Korea as well as members of the UK cluster.

This exciting event will take place on Wednesday 18th May 2005 in Lecture Theatre B, The Chancellor’s Building,

49 Little France Crescent, Edinburgh.

The keynote speaker from Korea will be Dr Woo Suk Hwang, Seoul National University. Dr Hwang was recently cited by TIME magazine as one of the most influential people of 2004 for his work on the cloning of the first human embryo. He will be joined on the platform by his team member Dr. Sung Keun Kang, who will speak on the technical aspects of their research. They will be followed by Professor Ian Wilmut from the Roslin Institute who will be the keynote Scottish speaker.

There will also be three Korean speakers from key organisations focussed in the field of regenerative medicine; Dr Hyung-Min Chung, Professor, Cell and Gene Therapy Research Institute, Pochun CHA University/CEO, Chabiotech, Co. Ltd;

Dr Cheong-Ho Chang, CEO, Cellontech Co. Ltd; Dr Hyunsoo Kim, CEO, FCB-Pharmicell Co., Ltd.
